Vivo has just announced its new concept smartphone in China, the Vivo APEX 2020. The company has been teasing this phone prior to its announcement, and it’s now official.
The company actually teased 60W wireless charging for this device prior to its launch, and it turns out it actually has 60W wireless charging, believe it or not. That’s only a part of the story, read on.
The phone is made out of metal and glass, though it’s mostly glass. The phone features a waterfall display with 120-degree curved on both the left and right sides. In other words, that display covers the sides, completely.
The Vivo APEX 2020 includes an under-display camera & bezel-less design
The phone also has no bezels, none at all. If you’re wondering where the camera is, well, it’s under the display. This may be a ‘concept phone’, but it has a functioning under-display camera.
The company says that the light transmittance has been increased (six times) where the camera is located. By doing that, the company was able to reduce optical interference, diffraction, and stray flashes.
If you’re wondering what kind of a camera Vivo is using, it’s a 16-megapixel sensor. That camera uses four-to-one pixel binning, and Vivo is relying on algorithm optimizations in order to fine-tune image quality.
The phone includes a 6.45-inch FullView waterfall display, but we don’t know its resolution just yet. Just like it was the case with the APEX 2019, this phone doesn’t have physical buttons. Vivo opted to include pressure-sensitive buttons on the side.
What about the earpiece, you may wonder? Well, that’s not included either, to keep that fully bezel-less design. The company is using something called ‘Screen SoundCasting’, which is the third-generation of this technology. It essentially uses the phone’s display as a speaker.
Now, in terms of rear-facing cameras, Vivo highlights Continuous Optical Zoom between 5 and 7.5x. The company claims this is the first handset in the world to offer continuous zoom at such high magnification.
Vivo is utilizing a 4-group lens combination with two fixed lenses, and two movable sensors in order to achieve continuous zoom. It’s also using multi-frame algorithms for object detection. Gimbal-like video stabilization is also included.
A whopping 60W wireless charging is also included
Now, the company’s 60W wireless charging is called ‘Wireless Super FlashCharge 60W’. Needless to say, that’s the fastest wireless charging to date. The company claims that you can charge up a 2,000mAh battery in just 20 minutes by using this.
That’s pretty much all the information that we have at the moment. Vivo did not release a full spec sheet or anything of the sort, as this is a concept phone. This phone will not be available to the public.
You may ask, what’s the point then? Well, Vivo tends to utilize technology shown in its ‘APEX’ concept phones later in the year, as it uses them in NEX-branded flagships. So, some of this tech could make it to the company’s 2020 flagship.
The most important aspects of this phone are definitely the under-display camera and 60W wireless charging. If Vivo manages to include those two in its upcoming flagship, it will manage to turn a lot of heads, that’s for sure.
Xiaomi’s exec said that under-display technology is not ready to be commercialized yet, but we’ll see if Vivo will manage to do it this year. We’re also interested to see how is Vivo handling heating when it comes to its 60W wireless charging. All in all, this is quite interesting.
